It was then when it sunk in and I was like, “Damn!” I realized that I was in the presence of one of my all time favourite Drag Race contestants whose emotional speech to her younger self left me and many Drag Race fans emotional as well and, moreover, inspired. ![]() The same applied to the other drag performers including Klub Kid legends Mother Tucker and Ellis Atlantis, all of whom stood out for their glowing drag aesthetics combined with their strong performance skills and impeccable ability to connect with everyone in the room.īy the time I got to meet Kim Chi and have a doughnut with her, I was left feeling pretty starstruck. Despite not being a fully trained professional dancer and having a lisp, both of which were frequently commented upon during her time on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” this did not stop Kim Chi from throwing a doughnut-themed Party which left myself and the rest of the audience gagging for more. Decked out in stunningly vivid drag attire, Kim Chi was ready to, in the words of her other catchphrase, “destroy everyone (with her make-up).” The more her long flowing white dress and wig spun whilst she fluttered her fake eyelashes, the more the audience roared with applause. This being my first ever experience of a drag show, I have never seen a group of people scream so loud when a drag queen has entered the room. Then of course, it came time for Kim Chi’s performance. The same prize was also at stake for another mini-competition, whereby audience members faced off in a battle as to who would finish first in eating a box of doughnuts (which kept to the theme of the event). This amazing night consisted of talented and energetic local drag queens serenading the audience with their dancing and lap-dancing skills, the latter of which even members of the audience soon done, when a bottle of champagne became the prize for whoever could give the best lap dance to a random male member of the audience. Like doughnuts, this drag show was a deliciously delightful experience for a number of reasons, and not only because of Kim Chi herself. Most of her fans have been left chanting her famous catchphrase “Donut Come For Me.” This pun of course linked to the title of the event “Kim Chi’s Donut Party” and it was not hard to relate to the catchphrase itself. This was obvious to see at this event due to some of the fans’ efforts that had gone in to making anime fantasy inspired attire that reciprocated that of their drag idol. Kim Chi’s “Donut Party” is one of the many examples which show why the opening of the new Heaven has been an astoundingly good idea.įor those of you who do not know, Kim Chi (also known as Sang-Young Shin), is a 29 year old Korean drag queen who rose to fame as a runner up on Season 8 of the reality TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Her remarkable and unique drag aesthetics combined with her cute and witty sense of humour are what lead to this fierce and talented queen winning the hearts of over one million Drag Race fans across the world. This was my first time visiting the new Heaven nightclub and I was looking forward to seeing what the new version had to offer-especially as the old Heaven was totally losing its touch this time last year. However, on the 29th January, this was not the case as myself and my best friend attended a drag show at the new Heaven nightclub in Liverpool. Normally on a cold Sunday night in January I am likely to be sat at home having a roast and dreading the next upcoming week doing my English course at university.
